Limerick Sixes Soccer World Cup

Launch of Limerick’s first intercultural soccer festival!

Limerick will play host to a new intercultural soccer festival, The Limerick Sixes Soccer World Cup 2010, will take place on Saturday, September 25th between 11am-7pm in the grounds of the Crescent Comprehensive School, Dooradoyle. This new annual event will seek to promote the role of sport-particularly soccer- in contributing to integration in the Mid-West. The festival also creates an opportunity to celebrate the growing cultural diversity in Limerick through food, music and dance.

32 teams representing countries from all over the world will battle it out to be crowned Limerick Sixes World Cup champions 2010! A women’s soccer tournament will also take place showcasing some of the region’s best footballing talent.

One of the organisers and National Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service Ireland, based in Dooradoyle, Eugene Quinn said: “We want to encourage men and women from local and migrant communities to participate in soccer in Limerick and to develop a sustainable annual intercultural football event in the region. We also hope that the event will be a fantastic day out with a great programme of both sporting and intercultural family friendly entertainment.”

The Limerick Sixes World Cup has been developed in partnership between the Limerick Integration Working Group, Jesuit Refugee Service Ireland, Doras Luimni, FAI, Limerick City Sports Partnership, Limerick County Sports Partnership, New Communities Partnership, Crescent College Comprehensive, Limerick Co-Ordination Office and HSI Business School.

In addition to a Men’s and Ladies Soccer Competitions there is plenty of free fun activities for all the family including: Parents and Kids Football Activities (Penalty Competition, Soccer Skills); African Dance Workshop; Music: Sounds of the World. There will also be hair-braiding, face-painting, fun and entertainment.
