JRS Europe Launches 2013 Annual Report

Forced migrants rescued from drowning by the Italian coastguard and brought to Lampedusa.JRS Europe used the occassion of the launch of its 2013 Annual Report to question why the acts of great hospitality towards refugees it has witnessed throughout Europe are not matched by political will.

Speaking at the launch, Michael Schopf, JRS Europe Director explained that JRS has documented countless cases and testimonies to ensure that the voices of migrants themselves are heard but asked:

"When will these local examples of human warmth, hospitality and kindness be translated into political action."

Europe has failed to take concrete steps to provide safe access to Europe for the thousands of desperate migrants fleeing war and oppression desipte the Lampedusa tragedy which claimed nearly 400 lives.  And in spite of the ongoing conflict in Syria, Europe has not adequately responded to what is now recognised as the worst refugee crisis in nearly 20 years.  Mr Schopf added:

"We will continue to accompany, serve and champion the cause of forced migrants for as long as there is injustice and cruelty in the treatment of refugees in Europe."
