International Priorities

Internationally, JRS runs campaigns focusing on urban refugees, access to education, refugee women, Somali refugees, hospitality, Haiti and forgotten refugees.  In response to the crisis in Syria, JRS Ireland has prioritised support for JRS International efforts to provide emergency relief to those in greatest need.

In response to the crisis in Syria, JRS Ireland has prioritised support for JRS International efforts to provide emergency relief to those in greatest need.

The conflict has already resulted in over 4.6 million Syrian refugees fleeing to neighbouring countries and in excess of 6.5 million persons displaced within Syria itself.

JRS is on the ground distributing emergency relief to those in greatest need and running educational activities to promote reconciliation and peaceful co-existence.  In Damascus, Homs, and Aleppo, staff and volunteers are currently providing food support, hygiene kits, basic healthcare, shelter management and rent support.  However, the needs of the growing number of internally displaced persons and refugees cannot be met by NGOs, the Syrian state or neighbouring countries alone.

JRS is calling on the Government to enhance Ireland's existing resettlement programme and explore scaling up safe and legal ways to facilitate greater access to protection in Ireland. This commitment would ensure Ireland is providing positive leadership in responding to the worst refugee crisis in nearly 20 years.
